There is Japanese custom to give New Year's gift money to kids. I gave 5000 yen ($48.08 €35.21) of New Year's gift money to my nephew at our family reunion in the New Year’s holiday. He is a junior high school student. I also gave a younger nephew 3000 yen ($28.85 €21.13). He is a preschool kid.
My two children got gift money from their uncle.
Generally the kids are given money by several relatives, so the total amount of money is pretty much. The following is the average amount of New Year's gift money which kids got at 2011 New Year’s holiday.
