Students' English Abilities in Japan by Prefecture, 2015
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology researches students' English abilities every year. According to it, the academic achievement varies in the prefectures. For instance, 52.1% of junior high school students in Chiba prefecture reach the level of STEP (Society for Testing English Proficiency) 3rd grade, on the other hand, only 25.8% of Kochi students reach the STEP 3rd grade. The STEP 3rd grade is approximately equal to TOEFL iBT 30.
The data below show the percentage of the junior high students whose English abilities reach STEP 3rd grade by prefecture, 2015.
